Deinstitutionalization and Day hospital

Abstract
Since the 1940¡¯s, a worldwide trend of psychiatric treatment of chronically mentally ill has been changed from institution based care to community based one. With the movement of deinstitutionalization, various kinds of rehabilitation facilities for the discharged patients were needed. Among them, day hospital was one of the most important community program for the mentally ill. It has been used as 1) a substitute for inpatient treatment 2) a substitute for outpatient treatment, and 3) a transition from inpatients to community. This paper describes the history, concepts, treatment programs, and cost effectiveness of day hospital treatments.
The authors expect the future prosperity of day hospital program will contribute a lot to the deinstitutionalization of and community psychiatric pare for the chronically and severe mentally ill in Korea.
